What is the Second Amendment?
When it was written as part of the Bill of Rights, the Second Amendment is to protect the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Its intent was to protect citizens from the power of an out-of-control government.
How could gun control keep us safer?
Going through a background check to ensure that a gun owner poses no risk to themselves or someone else could be a big safeguard. Similarly, laws requiring gun owners to store their guns in places where kids couldn’t gain access to them would save lives.
Are school shootings common?
Actually, despite the coverage received in the media, school shootings are very rare and represent a small percentage of gun violence incidents.
How is the Second Amendment interpreted today?
It depends on who you ask! Some say it gives citizens the right to possess any kind of gun without limitation. Others think that it’s a dated idea that needs to evolve with the times and for the good of safety.
Does gun control mean you’re against the Second Amendment?
Not necessarily. While some extreme gun control advocates want to get rid of the Second Amendment altogether, most think that safety and respect for the Constitution can exist side-by-side. In fact, most gun owners are responsible people who agree that there should be limitations.
How does the U.S. compare to other countries?
Unfortunately, the U.S. does have more gun violence than other countries. The sad reality is that we simply have far more guns and far weaker gun laws than most of the rest of the world.
What is “common sense gun control?
Those who are in favor of a modern intrepretation of the Second Amendment believe that it should be harder for guns to get into the hands of dangerous or irresponsible people.
What are the gun laws like in New York City?
In New York City, it’s very difficult to legally obtain a gun. Background checks, licenses, and permits are required. Additionally, the New York State “SAFE Act” bans assaults weapons and has serious penalties for people who use illegal guns. As such, the murder rate in NY has been declining every year.
How has activism created change over the years?
For the longest time, there was very little success on the part of those favoring gun control. Tragedies such as Parkland and Sandy Hook have mobilized thousands who are putting pressure on lawmakers. Most recently, the House of Representatives passed the strongest gun control bill in 25 years. (It still needs to be approved by the Senate and signed by the President.)
